He will describe the mindset and strategies of educators who are effective in reaching and teaching all students. He will highlight such topics as (a) the importance of applying a strength-based approach in which each student’s “islands of competence” are identified and reinforced, (b) the need to use empathy in understanding and responding effectively to students, (c) a framework for understanding the key components of intrinsic motivation, and (d) specific strategies for reinforcing motivation, learning, responsibility, hope, and resilience in all students. Coding Your Story
Limited Capacity seats available

Coding, is not just a process, but a language and means of communication. When considering its role in education, it is often siloed as an after school program, or isolated as an independent course. While these approaches can have a positive impact on students, it does not give all students access and opportunities to discover coding's role in their learning and life. Come learn how I developed a course that synthesizes coding and writers workshop in the elementary classroom. Beyond the benefits and skills gained through coding, it allows the writing process to become visual and hands-on, giving students a completely new way to develop their writing and coding literacies. Without question, coding will have a role in our students future, and it is up to us to empower them today for tomorrow.

CodeArt: Using Art to Disrupt Computer Science Education
Limited Capacity seats available

CodeArt uses art as a means to get more girls and other underrepresented students interested in computer science. Few women and minorities are majoring in computer science even though demand for graduates with computing skills is at an all-time high. Reasons for this include negative stereotypes and a later exposure to computer science for these groups.
CodeArt has found that teaching kids to “code art” counters negative stereotypes and provides an early onramp to CS education. We believe that incorporating coding into elementary and middle school art classes is an ideal way to introduce coding to a broader group of students. In this session, we will review our methods and share an introductory lesson. Attendees should bring a laptop if they want to code along.

Can We Take Care of Students if We Don’t Take Care of Ourselves?
Teachers and school administrators face many stresses in their work, which seem even more pronounced in today’s world. In this
session Dr. Brooks will describe a framework for moving from a position of stressed and/or burned out to one of “stress hardiness.” He will outline specific techniquesthat can be discussed at staff meetings to deal more effectively with stress in both our personal and professional lives. A basic premise of Dr. Brooks’ session is that the more we can take care of ourselves, the more we can meet the educational needs of students and the more likely we are to remain in the field of education. Many case examples will be provided.

How Studyo was developed from teacher feedback to help students build organizational skills

You Can't Make Them -So Now What?
Limited Capacity seats available

According to Paul Sloane “Creativity is thinking of something new. Innovation is the implementation of something new.” Therefore, innovation requires individual change, which means risk, support, and a culture of continuous improvement.
To achieve innovation driven growth you must:
-Understand the change process - how to work with the living, leave the dead alone, and revive the zombies .
-Know the type of organization you have created - how to shift to one of collegiality, where deep challenging conversations occur around important topics.
-Operate based on the principles of Perceptual Control Theory - forming agreements at all levels and managing agreements not people.
Learn how we have woken the zombies, focused on the living, shifted groups towards collegiality, formed agreements and kept it together by understanding why and how people behave.

Digital Identity: Growing Up in a Connected Culture
Limited Capacity filling up

Today, technology allows us to amplify students’ stories as learners produce, publish and share in our digital culture. Digital forms of storytelling—like blogs, tweets, and texts—invite new audience, offer diverse feedback and engage students to collaborate with the world. More so, sharing begs awareness, seeks understanding and has the potential to turn classroom devices into empathy-generating machines as kids interact and learn about the world. We celebrate the benefits of technology and explicitly teach students to consider their identity as they use media to understand themselves and their place in the global learning community.

Campfire conversations, cave paintings, letters mailed across the sea — the tools and times have changed, but the human condition has not. We are made for story. Today, we have so many ways for students to share their stories; we move beyond “write it down” and diversify the how with digital options: blog, make a movie, write a multi-touch book, sing a song, share online. When we invite kids to tell their stories, we place our students at the center of curriculum and make it about them. Level Up: Five Steps to Gamify Your Class
Limited Capacity seats available

The face of instruction is changing, as educators often struggle to engage digital natives. Gamification, or applying game mechanics to non-traditional settings, has proved to be an innovative and effective way to capture the interest of today's learners. In this session, educators will create a basic template to help them begin the process of gamifying their classroom for little or no money.

This will support Common Core standards, because it can be used by any educator in any content area at any level. The engagement and empowerment levels for students will be amplified, facilitating teaching and learning.

After attending this session, participants will:
a) understand what gamification in education means, and how it will help to engage digital natives.
b) understand the difference between gamification and game-based learning.
c) begin to create a gamification model that they can incorporate immediately, using Google Sites (example here: https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/thomas-jhfi-english/classstructure).
d) learn other resources to gamify for little or no cost.

RU Literate?
Limited Capacity seats available

Literacy is all about communication. Because literacy has always been related to technology (think printing press!) literacy continues to evolve along with our technological growth. We educators must understand the evolution of what it means to be literate. We must also continue our own literacy development in order to best educate our 21st century students. Let's talk about literacy in the technological age. How can we grow in our own learning to lead our students in theirs? We will look at examples of how to bring literacy to life using tools like Twitter, blogs, infographics, presentation formats and strategies like choice literacy (ie: Daily 5). We will also discuss what this means in relation to standards.

School Retool is an aspirational method to support school leaders in redesigning school culture using small, scrappy experiments called "hacks." Using design methodology pioneered by IDEO and refined by the Stanford Institute for Design for school leaders, School Retool uses hacks to start small, but they're built on research-based practices that lead to Deeper Learning. The belief is that small, brave and courageous acts can create the conditions for students to be prepared for college, career and civic engagement in the innovation economy. The experience is founded on three important Hack Mindsets: Bias Toward Action, Fail Forward to Learn, and Start Small.

Read the World NOW
Limited Capacity filling up

With the influx of mobile devices, multimedia websites, e-books, interactive graphics, and social media, there's no question that literacy is changing. But are we adjusting our pedagogy to adopt and adapt literacy instruction to meet the needs of today’s learner?
This workshop will explore the latest research and trends in digital literacy and investigate new modalities that require students to read beyond the text to comprehend new information. Holding on to what we know about best practice instruction, we’ll rethink reading with images, video, sketchnotes, graphics, AR and VR. Join in as we empower students to access, analyze and author their own messages as content creators in this participatory digital culture.

The Art and Soul of Education
Prepare to learn, laugh and maybe shed a sneaky tear as Cathy delivers the closing keynote at Edu-Shift 2017. With her irrepressible energy and dynamic presentation style, this session will provide educators with a new perspective on creative technology integration.
"A redefinition of creativity is required for the contemporary student in the context of an unpredictable future, a world of fast-paced development and complex problems. But when we look beyond the buzz-words and the catch phrases, what does 'being creative' really mean? Have you considered that every moment in teaching is a creative act? Or that to be creative is to be 'fully human'?
There's a lot we can learn about education, and ourselves, from the practices of artists.
As educators, we must believe in our own creativity to effectively design opportunities for students to engage with different ways of constructing knowledge, explore multiple perspectives, learn to rely on their imagination, leverage divergent thinking, harness interpretive abilities, etc. It also makes sense that a meaningful education must promote strong links between technology, those powerful tools our students are carrying around in their back pockets, and the ability to create.
So, get ready to remix and mash-up, make connections and make a mess, as we consider tra-digital approaches to education. Let’s talk about learning, art and our hearts."
